Balsa in Surfer
This article is in the new issue of Surfer. It's about balsa being used for big wave guns, but I thought it applied to small wave composites too. In the article Peter Mel is quoted as saying, "Balsa smoothes the ride, smoothes the paddle." He spoke of how balsa absorbs shock and chop. This is exactly what gives a handmade balsa composite board it's amazing ride quality. The balsa helps keep the board from having a chattery feeling ride that epoxies sometimes have. You end up with a lightweight board, comparable to a conventional epoxy with the smoother ride quality of a poly. And they are way more durable to boot. And cool looking.
