Continue ReadingCould be a handplane for bodysurfing, could be footwear. This handplane is made out of the scraps of paulownia left over from making alaias. Erin at Shelter Surf Shop prompted me to make these. I thought it was a pretty good idea, as the wood is so light and corky it feels like you hardly have anything strapped onto your hand. I’ll have one of these along with some other boards at the Thalia Surf/ Insight demo day this friday May 8th.
Continue ReadingThis is a recent addition to the series of foam boards I’ve been doing. It’s a pretty straightforward fish design with a slightly more pulled in nose and flat bottom, that blends into a 1″ of vee in the tail. It’s shaped from a sugar based, MDI, Ice Nine Cane blank and has a Fluid Earth bio plastic leash plug. Glassed light with no gloss and single foil fins, it’s meant to ride quick and responsive. It’s currently at Shelter Surf in Long Beach.
Continue ReadingThis is a 6’8″ hull made from sugar based Ice 9 MDI foam. It offers a bit more flex as well as being better for the environment than traditional TDI foam. This board also has a Fluid Earth corn based plastic/fiberglass fin box and leash plug. It represents the first in a series of more affordable boards, while still adhering to a sense of environmental stewardship. It’s available at Shelter Surf Shop in Long Beach.
Continue ReadingThanks to Estaban Bojorquez a.k.a Steve Krajewsky for his installation piece dedicated to Bob Simmons at Shelter Surf Shop in Long Beach. As we all know Simmons created the first compsand surfboards known as Simmons sandwiches (check out November 2007 archives). He inspired me to embark on my own journey down the compsand road. I am constantly excited to be experimenting with this “old” surfboard building technique and can’t wait to see what the future holds. Thanks again to Steve and huge thanks to Graham and Kim at Shelter for having a rad surf shop and throwing an awesome re-grand opening party.
