It’s a Long Process

I got a really unique request recently from my good friend Church, for a 4 channel single fin egg. He wanted it to be fairly short at 5′ 9″ and light and high performance. We went with Openface construction, with a double layer, concave deck of 2 lb. foam and 1/8″ poplar ply. Church also wanted it to be glassed with interference, or color shifting pigments that he uses in the amazing abstract paintings he makes. It gives the board a trippy iridescent look. He also taped off some geometrical patterns on the bottom that we sprayed white. The deck was also sprayed a matching blue with taped off triangles. This was one of the more complicated boards I’ve made, so I thought I’d show some of the process.  Enjoy your board!

Fosshull

13th April 2010

fosshull92

This is the latest hull shape to come out of the shop. Dimensions are 5’11″ x 22″ x 2 3/4″. I kept the bottom a little flatter than a true hull like I usually do, so it has a bit of the quick get up and go of a planing hull. I also kicked a little more rocker into it so it’ll wrap a tighter arc. I do this to suit the local beachbreak conditions better or to give a more hyper feeling ride to point surf. The openface construction allows the board to flex and load up a bit more than a full composite sandwich which suits the hull design really well. The Tyler Warren logo finishes it off with a bit of bling. This board is avaliable at Thalia Street Surf Shop in Laguna Beach.

Openface Grande

27th March 2010

A really nice guy named Paul was interested in an Openface shape recently. He saw Mitch Coleborn riding one in the extra features of BS! RT originally prompted me to come up with this construction to get more flex. He’s 70 lbs. lighter and several inches shorter than this customer, so the dimensions had to be blown up considerably.  RT’s original dims of 5’6″ x 20″ x 2 1/4″ were changed to 6’0″ x 20 3/4″ x 2 5/8″. The rocker and foil were kept the same as the original design but the rails were plumped up a bit so the board can push back through turns. Thanks for the order Paul and enjoy. Toothpaste green is the new black.

Just finished this board for a local customer. It’s their first custom board and they wanted a fun type shape that would be light, maneuverable, and last a long time. We agreed the Openface type construction would work well for this. Dimensions are 7’0″ x 21″ x 2 3/4″. Thanks for the order Josette.
