A great customer of mine named Doug came to me with his cherished 6’7″ Mark Richards twin fin, signed my MR himself (I should have taken photos of it but didn’t) and asked if I could copy it in wood. He wanted the same classic ride but a little more revved up with the wood composite build. We did full balsa for super lightweight-ness and redwood burl fins for some extra bling. We were pretty happy with the result. Now go do some wounded gull bottom turns Doug!

The Mini Bob is a super fast, super loose board that paddles and catches waves surprisingly well. It’s the perfect small wave toy, when you’re tired of trying to ‘shred’ mediocre conditions and just want to go fast, glide through turns, and simply have fun. Named after the inventor of wide tailed twin finned surfboards, Bob Simmons, and inspired by Richard Kenvin and his Mini Simmons projects. Made thick and wide, they have plenty of float and in fact paddle much better than a conventional short board. They come with light and buoyant solid wooden keel fins, shaped with a thick single foil. Average length around 5′… so pretty much really short.

New Flatbreads are in!

So I’ve been making wood boards for a while now and while they’re beautiful, super strong, and ride really great, they’re not the most affordable and they take a little longer to build. There will always be people out there (and I thank you!) who will be into those type of boards (me included of course). But a little over a year ago I thought I should offer something for the rest of you and began experimenting with composite foam boards. These aren’t solid foam with a stringer but rather three layers of EPS foam (no PVC!) , with two dense layers outside and one lightweight one inside. This makes a core that is super light so you can glass the finished board stronger with no weight penalty. What’s even better is the ride. Super responsive. The feel of the board can be changed when building the blank by adding different types of glass, carbon, or even wood (of course) in between the layers. Now your custom board can have a few more variables to choose from. Length, width, thickness, and also flex and weight. Prices start at $595.

This is a recent twinfin I made with a center fin option. The customer wanted the loosness and speed of a twin with the option to put a trailer fin in so he could surf more in the pocket when he wanted or when the waves got a little more punchy. I went ahead and made him a 3 1/4″ trailer fin too cause’ he wanted green and I like my customers happy.

The FossOdd is a small wave machine.

The FossOdd is a combination of the Fosshull and Quodd models. You get the same wide skatey tail of the Quodd with an equally wide FossHull nose. What does this give you? Well, the wider nose provides lift and planing which translates into a faster board that paddles way better than it should. It’s a small wave machine. Comes in tri, quad, or five fin setups and sizes 5′- 6’6″.

This is a newer version of the original FossOdd model.

This is a newer version of the original FossOdd model. It was made for a customer named Breene who had previously been riding a Quodd model for a long time. He wanted the same short, wide and skatey type board but with a tad bit more width in the nose for extra paddling and planing speed. The five fin box setup was chosen because it’s apparently the new black. Really, it’s kinda great to have on a board like this because of all the real estate in the tail. There’s a lot of room to play with different setups and you can have a seriously different feeling board by simply switching out the fins. And there are a lot of fin choices these days.

This board was built for a big guy who surfs like a small guy.

This board was built for a big guy who surfs like a small guy. He’s quick and nimble and knows how to square off the bottom and hit the lip, even when the waves aren’t so good. With the wide point moved up a bit and a little more thickness hidden in the middle, the board paddles well. The double wing design keeps everything loose and responsive. The 5 fin setup makes this a very versatile board too. The owner has been using a quad setup with a new Nubster center fin and let me now it’s the first time he’s really liked a quad. He said it’s fast like a quad but pivotal like a thruster. Built with full balsa composite construction with a 3 ply poplar stomp patch, this board is made to last.

This is a new board I made for my friend Adam. Dimensions are 5’2″x 22 3/4″x 2 3/8″. He wanted a board very different then his standard collection of shortboards. We combined a FossHull nose template with a Quodd tail and squashed them together into a short, round disk that gets up to plane speed really fast and is super manuverable. We combined that with a five fin convertable setup and ended up with a fairely versatile board that put some fun back in his quiver. Construction: Openface Wood: Balsa Fins: Futures Stretch Quad
